You will need to spend time and energy as well as a significant amount of money towards obtaining a certification so you have to ensure that you get true value. Value isn't defined as something being cheap. Value is when the price matches the quality of goods and services received.
What are the 6 key things to look out for in a teacher training course?
- Is the course mostly taught online? If this is the case I suggest avoiding the course altogether. Online documents can provide supporting materials but will not teach you the practical skills you will require in your future career.
- Does the course get you to develop your own practice? It is impossible to become a great instructor without a personal practice. Doing and observing are learning tools and allow you to absorb the full essence of what Pilates is.
- How long is the course? The length of the course will give you a great idea on how comprehensive the course is. However beware of long courses because this suggest the course provider is removed from your progress. ( A lot of the longer courses are remote )
- Do you get regular workshops in which concepts are discussed and skills developed? It is possible to read a book and know everything about Pilates but it is only through doing workshops, being coached and mentored by expert trainers that one can develop the teaching skills and flair necessary to be successful
- How much does it cost? Cost does matter but it isn't everything. A £4000 course might be better value if you are getting more of the above. That being said a lot of course are overpriced.
- Provider's credentials. I suggest avoiding providers with no physical studios even if they rent a space. You want to associate with an established business with good reputation. This will give your certification the weight it deserves and make it easier to get into interviews.
